Saturday reading series in Cranford: what we ask of playwrights

The writer will be functioning as a coproducer with The Theater Project.

Always happy to chat -- Mark, 973 919-4818

With so many new members, I think it's a good idea to review the rules of the road.

We want your material to have been read and discussed by the group prior to presenting it in Cranford.

ADMINISTRATION:

Provide Mark with a synopsis and short bio one month before your presentation.

No matter how strong your resume, writers do not act in or direct their own presentations.

Playwrights do not attend morning rehearsal -- they join the cast at the 1pm lunch which they provide.

Provide Mark with all needed program information 10 days before the reading. If possible, gather headshots of the actors involved for social media. Theater Project will publish them.

EXECUTION

TTP provides modest stipends for actors ($50) and directors ($100).

Playwrights line up director and cast as follows:

SCRIPT COPIES: In some cases, the library has been willing to print scripts for actors. If your play is very long and or has a cast of thousands, you may be asked to print copies for the actors.

If you need them, we will provide contact information for actors and directors. Before having any conversation with any talent, please confer with Mark. (If I think you have shot your script in the foot in the past, I will tell you.) When you nail down a director, give them input on casting as well.

When two or three writers are sharing a presentation, it is desirable to have casts and/or directors overlap. (The grant money runs out when the money runs out – we hope to avoid cutting the reading series short).

Make sure your actors and directors are aware that these are lightly staged readings (enter, exit, stand, sit). We want the audience to feel as though they are watching a rehearsal on its feet.

Directors decide what time to begin the Saturday morning rehearsal based on the material. We aim for lunch at 1pm. The presentation starts at 2pm.

LUNCH!

We promise the cast lunch at 1pm. This is provided by the playwrights. Pizza is a frequent choice. We can make recommendations.
