EPISODE 33: REWRITING HISTORY
Sunday, May 26, 2024
Mark Spina sits down with members of our playwrights group, Joe Vitale and Lynn Marie Macy, to discuss the challenges when writing about historical events or people, what drew them to that genre and the various approaches a writer can take when doing so.
Lynn Marie Macy's most recent plays at The Theater Project (TTP) are Combustible: A Sanitized Love Story, Getting Grandma’s Goat, The Surprising Measure of Buried Treasure, The Couch Potato & The Armchair Activist and Sister Resisters. Her script The Color Of Vengeance was performed at New Perspectives Theater Company and McNeese University. Her translation/adaptation of George Sand’s Gabriel was presented on Zoom by New Perspectives, NYC, for On Her Shoulders. Her script Lady Susan or The Captive Heart, A Jane Austen Bodice Ripper was presented in a reading at Theater 2020 in NYC last spring. Macy is Playwright-In-Residence, Theater 2020, New Perspectives full-length Women’s Work Lab, and member of TTP’s Playwrights Workshop & Dramatists’ Guild.
Joseph Vitale, a finalist for the 2020 Woodward-Newman drama prize and recipient of a NJ Council on the Arts fellowship in playwriting, is the author of a number of plays, including Murrow , a one-man show about the life of Edward R. Murrow (called “a dramatic masterpiece” by the Huffington Post), which was performed Off-Off Broadway in 2016. His one-acts have been performed around the country. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and The Theater Project Playwrights Workshop. His play, The Interpreter, is part of The Theater Project's mainstage season in 2024.
